It's not just magic. It's science.

Here's what's happening inside your brain during a trip. Published in Nature, backed by Johns Hopkins, studied at Imperial College London.

Step 1 — Ingestion

It starts in your stomach.

When you eat magic mushrooms, your body gets to work quickly. The active compound — psilocybin — is broken down in your gut and converted into psilocin.

Psilocin then enters your bloodstream and makes its way to your brain. The whole process takes anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes.

“Psilocybin is essentially a prodrug — your body converts it into the active molecule psilocin, which does the real work.”

Step 2 — The Lock & Key

Psilocin looks a lot like serotonin.

Psilocin's molecular shape is remarkably similar to serotonin — the neurotransmitter your brain naturally produces to regulate mood, sleep, and appetite. Because of this similarity, psilocin can slip into the same receptors serotonin uses, particularly one called the 5-HT2A receptor.

Serotonin and psilocin are two keys that can unlock the same lock. When psilocin binds to the 5-HT2A receptor, it starts a cascade of effects.
Different molecules bind to different receptors — psilocin fits the same receptor as serotonin.

Step 3 — Your inner narrator goes quiet

Meet the Default Mode Network.

Your brain has a region called the Default Mode Network (DMN) — a collection of areas that are most active when you're doing nothing in particular. It's essentially your inner narrator: the part of your brain responsible for daydreaming, self-reflection, and the story you tell yourself about who you are.

In people with depression or anxiety, the DMN can get stuck in a loop — replaying the same negative thoughts over and over. Psilocin disrupts this. It quiets the DMN down significantly, which is why many people report a reduced sense of ego and a feeling of being more connected to the world around them.

Step 4 — A whole new conversation

Brain regions that never talk
start talking.

One of the most striking things researchers have observed is what happens to brain connectivity under psilocybin. Normally, your brain operates in organised, efficient networks — specific regions handle specific tasks and don't cross-communicate much.

Psilocybin changes all of that. It breaks down the usual boundaries and allows regions that don't normally interact to start communicating. The result looks less like a well-organised office and more like a free-flowing brainstorm — noisier, but in many ways more creative and connected.

Before

The organized brain

Efficient, predictable, but potentially stuck in rigid patterns of thinking.

During

The open brain

Usual boundaries dissolve. Brain regions communicate freely. Ego quiets. New perspectives emerge.

After

The rewired brain

New neural connections form. Rigid patterns soften. Effects can last weeks or months.

Step 5 — The Reset

The changes don't stop when the experience does.

Perhaps the most exciting finding from recent research is that the effects of psilocybin extend well beyond the experience itself. Studies have shown that even a single dose can trigger the growth of new synaptic connections in the brain — physical, structural changes that persist long after the molecule has left your system.

Research published in Nature found that dendritic spine density — the tiny branches that help neurons communicate — increased by around 10% after a single dose and remained elevated for at least a month. Researchers describe this as a “reset” — as if the brain has been rebooted, breaking free from the rigid patterns associated with depression, anxiety, and rumination.

“A single dose can trigger the growth of new neural connections that persist for weeks — the brain literally rewires itself.”

What people report

The numbers speak for themselves.

Smiling customer

80%

of participants in a Johns Hopkins study rated their psilocybin experience as one of the top 5 most meaningful of their entire lives.

71%

of people with treatment-resistant depression showed significant improvement after just two sessions, per Imperial College London research.

1 dose

was enough to produce lasting increases in neural connectivity — effects observed up to a month later in brain imaging studies.
